A blood test usually involves taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm.

The arm is a convenient part of the body to use because it can be easily uncovered. The usual place for a sample to be taken from is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface.

Blood Taking Service for Blood Tests

The Red and Green Practice offers a Blood Taking (Phlebotomy) Service at Waterside and Blackfield Health Centres Monday to Friday Mornings and at Waterside afternoon appointments are available.

As part of Waterside Primary Care Network we are also able to offer some blood test appointment on a Saturday morning at Waterfront & Solent Surgery. All blood tests must be pre booked.

Your GP will request a blood test to investigate a health concern or monitor your medical condition. When you have the form you may either:

  • ask at Reception to arrange an appointment, or telephone the Appointment Line on 02380899119

  • use Patient Access and book your appointment electronically.

Once your appointment has been booked  please make a note to ensure that you don't forget to attend and take the form you were given by your GP with you. If it is a 'fasting' blood test you may wish to book an appointment for early in the day, before you have breakfast.

You should be aware that some blood tests are specialist tests and require attendance at the hospital and can’t be done at the surgery. You will be told about this when you are given the blood test form by your GP.
